Philip Akkerman (Vaassen 1957) studied at the KABK in The Hague and the Ateliers 63 in Haarlem. In 1981 he started painting self-portraits and nothing but self-portraits. At this moment he has painted more than 4600 self-portraits. The artist says about his work: "With man, existence, which is a blind potency, can see and contemplate itself. That is what I paint". The work is characterized by an enormous variety. Akkerman's work has been shown in many galleries and museums in the Netherlands, London, Paris, Hamburg, Vienna, New York, Beijing, Turin, Brussels, Zurich, Gstaad, Milan, Perugia, Madrid, Athens, Washington DC, Moscow, Singapore, Berlin... Akkerman lives in DenHaag. In the Netherlands his work is represented by Torch Gallery.
